In 2002, international celebrations marked fifty years since Queen Elizabeth II’s accession. A number of large-scale public events were held to mark the anniversary and a range of monuments and souvenirs commissioned, including a collection of Crown coins, issued by The Royal Mint. This commemorative Brilliant Uncirculated Five Pound features a one-off obverse and reverse, used only for this issue. One side shows a youthful equestrian portrait of Her Majesty. This bears similarities to the motif that appeared on the reverse of the 1977 Silver Jubilee Crown. The inner Latin legend, translated, reads ’The love of the people is the Queen’s protection’ – a motto last used on the coinage of Charles I. The date appears below, divided by a small shield of royal arms, within a garter. This is paired with an unusual bust on the reverse in which the Queen looks over her shoulder with a pensive expression. This is also the work of Ian Rank-Broadley, its dramatic impact heightened by the lack of text, excepting a small below with the denomination (‘FIVE POUNDS’). Although made from the same cupro-nickel as the coins in your change, these BU coins are struck at a higher standard than circulating coins, with a higher-quality finish to bring out the details of each design. With a standard diameter of 38.61 millimetres and a weight of 28.28 grams, this crown comes in the original presentation wallet filled with detailed information about the coin and Jubilee, and beautiful pictures of The Queen since 1952.
