From a limited issue of 22,060: the 2016 William Shakespeare brilliant uncirculated Two Pound coin set. William Shakespeare is possibly the greatest writer in the English language to have lived, with his extant works still being performed and cherished over 400 years since they were originally written. He was born in Elizabethan England in April 1564 and contemporary records show that several of his plays were being performed on stage by 1592. This pre-owned UK coin set consists of three different £2 pieces commemorating his legacy, struck with a cupro-nickel centre and a nickel-brass outer ring. Each coin plays on a theme that is mentioned in Shakespeare’s famous collection of plays, which is formally called ‘Mr. William Shakespeare’s Comedies, Histories, & Tragedies’ but is now commonly referred to as the ‘First Folio’. Expert coin designer John Bergdahl masterfully adapts an image expressing comedy, history and tragedy separately on each collector’s piece, with each coin, in turn, displaying a joker’s hat and stick, a crown and sword and a skull with a rose. Each reverse design is paired with Jody Clark’s obverse engraving of Queen Elizabeth II, which is the fifth and final British coin effigy of Her Majesty. These coins are one of the first to feature this final engraving of the Queen. Specifications of each £2 are a weight of 12.00 grams, a 28.40 millimetre diameter and a brilliant uncirculated finish. Your coins are housed in the original Royal Mint slipcase, which has the Martin Droeshout portrait of Shakespeare displayed on the packaging.
